A Star Acre Update: Our Laundry Room

Well well well,

I feel like I truly owe you so much information. when I started this blog 11 years ago, it was truly my saving grace. Being the first in my friend group to have kids, I ended up losing many. Writing on the blog (even though I still only think my family reads it) made me feel like I was talking to someone and made me feel less alone in motherhood.

You see, after losing those friends, and moving to my small hometown and working from home, I dont have the ability to make friends. Its a very lonely life in that regard. I miss girls nights, I miss the drop in for afternoon tea for an hour after school like my moms friends always did. And now I find life sometimes gets so hectic I forget to write on here. So, to solve that, Yes I’m taking applications for new mom friends ;) lol,but also, I want to start showinh up here again. I want to share the big, the small, the mundane with you here, on my space, that has no algorythm or competition.

In saying that, we have been busy….

Let’s rewind. When we purchased this house in November 2022, the kitchen was in a small dark corner of the house with the basement stairs running through the middle. It just didn’t work with our lifestyle or have the ability to lay out space the way we would want to during the renovation. So, we spent the first year of living in this home, completely moving the kitchen and a few walls to the back of the house where the sun shone all day long.

This meant that we started this year with two kitchens in our home and two entrances to our house in the front, neither of which had the space for a family of 5+ a dog to enter in and out at the same time without becoming a complete clustered mess.

In February, we decided we needed to change that. We took a few days and completely gutted the old kitchen and removed the wall to where there was a tiny hallway to a side entry.  We were then left with a beautiful large room that we could turn into a really good, functioning, laundry and mudroom for our family. Unfortunately, like most of you, we didn’t have the budget to do much more than gutting the space. So for the last seven months, we have been planning, budgeting, selecting, and everything else we had to do to prepare to actually make the space into a reality.

We are finally at that moment. Over the last two weeks, we finished the demolition on a few of the areas we had put off originally, we have had electrical and plumbing to the new layout of the space, and we have built a wall to make our floor plan work with everything we want to include in the room.

It’s finally starting to look like this renovation is actually happening for a long time didn’t feel like it was. That’s why I wanted to write this blog. we don’t need everything to happen like it does on TV. It is OK to work on renovations when your paycheque allows and for those renovations to take to accomplish.

So what’s next?

We are currently on the hunt for the best price for wall paneling. We are making the entire space tongue and groove to make sure it stands up to everything Our kids will probably throw at it. We also need to finish our dog bath so that it is ready for tile. Once those two things are up, we will paint the entire space and then start laying a beautiful brick floor in a herringbone lay.

Then it just leaves us with installing cabinetry.

We eventually want to do lockers on one wall, but if budget doesn’t allow it, we have an antique coat rack. We will hang on the wall while we save up for that portion.

I cannot wait to finally see the space closer to the end and share it with you.
