The Benefit Of A Good Tailor

Oh, this Jacket. I remember seeing it at Club Monaco a good 7-8 years ago and falling inlove. Unfortunately, my mom was shopping with me, and although the size XS fit like a glove and gave me that tailored look, my mom convinced me that I needed the small so I could "fit a big sweater under". Come on now, how often would I throw a big sweater on under a coat like this. I mean I get it if it were your everyday, hoodie underneath winter coat. But this is a black wool military coat. You wear a silk blouse and maayyybbeee a cardigan under it. Nonetheless, I got the store to hunt down a small in Montreal's location and my sister and brother-in-law who were living there at the time, picked it up and shipped it home for me. I opened that package and hated what I put on. By that time the X-Small in store was already sold but the Small just fit so awful. I thought maybe it looked bad because of the length, so I took it in to get the hem shortened (spending a pretty penny). That didnt help at all. This meant that it hung for the past 7ish years in various closets, at the many places I have lived, hoping to one day have it fit me the way that smaller size did. This year, I decided to take it out. I tried it on with Rob and we figured out that it was the shoulders that were too big. See, it had this weird pleat in the back which made the shoulders hang almost forward. AWFUL! Anyways, back to the point, I took it to our amazing tailor down on Spring Garden Road. After 5 mins of getting me to turn everywhichway, he came up with a plan to make it look amazing. I left it in his hands. Rob brought it home a few weeks later. I right away put it on and there it was, the look I had been wanting from this darn jacket for 7 years. Now you cant take it off me.
Having a short waist and a short distance between my chest and shoulders, mixed with a long leg length, I have had many experiences with tailors. Trust me on this, when you find a good one, keep them close because the will become your best friend. Whether its taking in the leg on those bell bottom jeans that never looked good and making then a skinny jean, or helping you not have to go purchase a new wardrobe because you have lost a bit of weight, they know what to do to make you feel like the clothes were tailored to you. If your in the Halifax area, I recommend Lana`s Tailoring. The man is funny and charming, plus a major love for his job. And those of you reading from away, the best place to ask is a high end store who doesnt have an inhouse tailor. They usually have a good idea of who to trust.
