It’s finally time to tackle a full bathroom reno

It’s finally time to tackle a full bathroom renovation in this house. We have 3 1/2 bathrooms. We tackled the half bath in a weekend project a few years ago but after the flood of 2023 in Nova Scotia, this full bath had stood empty.

We are working with limited budget because at the end of the day it’s just a basement bathroom for our kids when they’re in the family room and our guests when it turns into our guest room. I’m going full saving mode on this and I’m going to take you along as I design and Rob renovates, as I try to prove that good design doesn’t take a ton of money.

Here in Nova Scotia, February usually means the worst of winter weather is about to hit. So, I’m over here busy pinning spring and summer views to keep pushing through.

Home takes time… here’s before and afters of what we’ve done working our butts off for the last 3.5 years. It’s not perfect, having done all the work besides plumbing and electrical ourselves on a budget while working and parenting. But, man we are proud to live in a beautiful safe space and raise our kids showing them that anything is learnable.

The weight of the world is too heavy right now, and with the stress of this weather adding to that for half the Continent, I find myself looking for the joys and focusing on that. Trying new things, deep cleaning, organizing, anything to not focus on the sadness happening everywhere.

So, join me in trying something new today that takes advantage of the weather outside instead of feeling negative towards it.

It’s a classic if you give a mouse a cookie scenario!

in the spring, we started, switching out all of our windows in the original portion of the farmhouse. But of course, that obviously meant new trim around the windows because the old windows were technically smaller. And with new trim, our window treatments didn’t work anymore so of course we had to get new window treatments. We decided to do the window treatments throughout the whole bottom level from @neutralcurtains and with the final window being installed right before Christmas, I was finally able to install the last group of shades.

They are the perfect linen cordless shade with just the right light filtering to keep our house bright but give us privacy.

Sometimes little changes can really make you feel like you’re making a difference in your home.

I know you all love this little corner with the candles, but the truth is I never light them. So with that being said, it’s time to give this corner a little bit of a change up and finally hang all of my antique green plates.

This is our fourth winter in the farmhouse, and it finally felt like the right time to upgrade how we heat and cool our space.

How we shop for antiques (and why some pieces stay forever)

When we’re buying antiques—especially on Facebook Marketplace—we’re not just looking at how pretty something is.

We always check:
• Solid wood over veneer (so it can be refinished and lived with)
• Proper joinery like dovetails or finger joints
• Overall condition: patina is welcome, structural issues are not
• Wood species: we gravitate toward pine and oak for their lighter, timeless tones
• Construction & feel: it should feel sturdy, supported, and well made

If a piece passes all five, it usually earns a place in our home for the long haul 🤍
These are the antiques we’ll never sell.

Slow down and savour the last bit of the holidays!

I grew up in a house where the Christmas tree didn’t go up until 17 December, and stayed up until the end of January because my dad wanted it still up for his birthday on January 19th. As parents, we spend so much time prepping for the holiday season, this time in between Christmas and New Year’s should be for enjoy enjoying the fruits of our labor, not rushing into the next season.

We are so happy with our @balsamhillca and how it’s is so realistic it has tricked many of you. And have a good fake tree means we can keep it up as long as we want without worrying about the mess.

Which leads me to wonder, are you team tree up until January or do you take it down right away?
