We are bringing in the cheer!

The last few weeks were hard. We are now all about making this the happiest holiday season we can. if you followed me and my Christmas decorations for a while, you know, I am so inspired with the old way of decorating using things you have around you. I’m also very fortunate to have Christmas tree farmers as family members and live in the Christmas tree capital of North America. But year in and year out, I love to watch Period Based movies to inspired me on what to make. This year I introduced Poppy to Little women. And as we watched the remake version, we decorated the mantle with @shopfauxliage northern white cedar garland, with real cedar tucked into it and dried oranges. The more simpler the better.

Another item in our home you won’t find anywhere else.

There are so many things that I absolutely love about antiques. In a world where we like to come to Instagram to be inspired, shopping links becomes a go to. I love shopping links don’t get me wrong. But there are certain items you just can’t buy in a store. And, if you can, a lot of times, they are just not in my budget. That’s when Rob and I fell in. Love with antiques. We were looking for affordable secondhand furniture for our first rental, purchasing, and restoring old items were the only thing we could afford. It’s now our favourite thing to do together.

We purchased this early 1900s railroad gas lanterns at an antique market because I just couldn’t stop thinking about it and how good it would look with a candle in our living room. But once I got it home, my mind started spinning. I have always loved the massive lanterns that @amberinteriors uses but after pricing them out at almost $15,000 apiece, I thought, can I hack this lantern into a lookalike? Turns out I could with a $20 @ikeacanada pendant kit and some @wayfaircanada items.

I just need to shorten the chain, but now we have a stunning, one-of-a-kind kitchen island pendant because I took the risk.

We said goodbye to our sweet Zeus pup. He had an aggressive form of lymphoma. We fell in love with him at first sight days after I had a dangerous miscarriage. It was serendipitous. In his almost 9 years, he became our children’s protector, my running buddy, the lick you needed when you came to visit, the baby I needed when I lost my own, and above all, our family’s very best friend. The pain we have felt these past days, the grief of losing a pet, is hard to describe. But, he is up in dog heaven, and if it’s anything like what the kids think it will be, he will have THE TIME OF HIS LIFE. I love you Zeus Pup for ever and ever. #zeusdecoeli

The Range hood reveal!
For those of you who are just as dedicated to this kitchen project as we are. Our goal is to get it completely finished Eve and we are almost there. between Rob and I, we have built everything from scratch, including the range hood with our convertible @empavaappliances range hood underneath. It’s definitely not the vision we had as moulding is probably one of the more difficult things to perfect. But with some quick thinking, and wood fill, she looks perfect. I have a whole highlight on how exactly we built it over on the feed.

What’s left:
• close in the beam
• paint the ceiling
• install toe kicks
• trim out Powder room door
And eventually build our dream island. But I’ll let rob agave a long break before that 🫣.

When Emmitt was a year and a half he became really sick and his cough never went away. We spent three sleepless months,being up with him all night, coughing or rushing him to emerg, until he was finally diagnosed with asthma. When we first saw the cabinet on FB marketplace we knew she was everything we were looking for in the cabinet for our soon to be mudroom. At that point we thought we were just leave her with her original color. Once the cabinet arrived in our driveway, we saw how the years took its toll on the beautiful wood and that a full refresh was needed. For now, the cabinet will live in our living room while we slowly catch up on the projects we have before we start the big project of the mudroom. Last year, we sold our old home and moved into this one just mere weeks before Christmas. Renovations were in full effect and so we didn’t get to have the warm Christmas feeling of decor in our home besides the living room. This year, with an almost completely renovated main level, we are calling it our FIRST REAL CHRISTMAS in our home, and we want to make sure we are intentional with our decor. Living in the country, we are always inspired by natural elements that surround us for decor. I used to be a serial clothing shopper. Having gone to school for fashion in Toronto, it just kind of came with the territory. But over the last few years, I have been trying to train myself to stop purchasing everything I like the look of even if the quality isn’t there, and start really looking at paring down to a curated closet for the season.

I’ve been investing in 2-3 items each season that my closet is missing or needs to be replaced. That’s why I love shopping at @anothershopboutique. All of the pieces are of the highest quality and ethically made. Allowing me to invest each season, knowing that the style will still be in for years to come and the items won’t fall apart within that timeline. But, as a country bumpkin, I also look for items that I know will fit into my everyday casual life. This beautiful plaid wool coat that feels like I’m wrapping myself in a blanket was a must. We are still picking away at our Primary Bedroom, because, like I’m sure many of you also suffer from, our bedroom is often a dumping ground for dirty, laundry, clean, laundry, and everything else in between. But, one thing we love and are so happy we got as soon as we moved in, was our cordless shades from @blindstogo in Dow Cloud with light filtering liner. When you find a good branch.

this week I have taken a break on doing any big renovations to the house. I went hard for a good month and really burnt myself out. Rob and I are hoping to get all of the projects we’ve started wrapped up over the next couple weeks which includes a project we’ve been planning for a year. But until then, let’s just enjoy this pretty finished corner of the house.

One corner of the kitchen at a time.
today marks one whole year since we picked up the keys to this home. The first video shows you a walk-through we did on closing. The home was chopped up, a mix of 90s and 70s all fan jangled into one.

but we saw this. We saw the entire backlit beauty of the back of the house becoming a KITCHEN. It’s taken as a whole year to get it almost finished and I’m sure we will be working on it for many years to come. but, Rob built every single cabinet, drawer, and door by hand, based on a picture I drew up for him. It may have taken a long time to get here, but also look how far we’ve come. Blood, sweat, tears, and just pure happiness to have a kitchen big enough to gather our family together on the special occasions, and for the after dinner dance parties just the five of us. NOW LETS GET THIS KITCHEN DONE FOR CHRISTMAS!

Our living room is long and narrow, and our family large, so we hunted for the perfect sectional that would fit us all, and fit in the narrow space. I’m chatting on the blog today about how the @hauserfurniture Santa Monica Sectional checked all the boxes.

Books are such a huge part of how we spend time not only together but also as part of our bedtime routine. One of our favorite writers, @jonklassen, just came out with a fun spooky kids’ chapter book and the kids love reading it over and over both together and alone. It’s called The Skull and it follows a little girl who has run away and found an abandoned house. Her adventure keeps you on
