Once upon a time, this was where we parked our cars. Now? It’s where we park ourselves—with a drink in hand and a s’more (or three) on deck.⁠⁠

This week on our backyard rehab series, we tackled one of the most unloved corners of our property and gave it a total glow-up—just in time for hosting guests this weekend. ⁠

We’ve been dreaming of a fire pit area that feels relaxed, a little coastal, and totally us… so we teamed up with @ikeahfx to bring that vision to life. And let’s just say—she’s officially no longer just a former parking lot. 🔥⁠

When we moved in, the windows were stuck shut, drafty, and clouded over — very ‘90s and not in a good way. Swapping them out has been one of the quietest but most meaningful changes. Fresh air, natural light, and views that finally feel like part of the home.

We went with @jeldwencanada JWC8500 series in casement style and are so very happy. On these hot summer days, we noticed a huge difference in the heat of the sun, not transferring into the house as much as the old windows let in. Perfect for this old girl without air conditioning.

So we spent a whole year evicting every stone (and a few questionable artifacts), then added a cocktail of horse manure and good soil to convince something—anything—to grow. Rob even tilled it all by hand, because we like our gardening with a side of pain. Now it’s finally planted… and we wait. Will it flourish or flop? I love an antique wood window but the windows that were installed in the house when we purchased it weren’t that. They were Wood windows installed in the 90s that literally could not keep up with our Nova Scotia weather. @jeldwencanada new JWC8500 series is super long lasting and low maintenance. It’s also built for our Canadian weather, meaning it’s up to 22% more efficient. I think our favourite part is the finishelid exterior that we were able to get in a beautiful claystone color that is scratch resistant, giving our exterior of our house, an extra bit of charm.

This space has been 18 months in the making. There have been lots of tears, lots of blood and many many fights when we were knee-deep in hours upon hours of demolition and rebuilding.

But, it’s now a space that welcomes us home, waves us goodbye, and invites our visitors to be comfortable in our home.

The thing I love most, the extra storage it has created for our home thanks to the cabinets from @mykitchcabinets . We’ve loved using their door fronts for IKEA boxes in our old house, but in this space we tested out their fully customizable size cabinet boxes and front and let me tell you I built all of these cabinets for the entire space in less than an hour and a half. It would’ve taken Rob over a month to build the cabinets to be the right custom size. We went with the colour brownstone

It’s taken a good 12 years to collect all the things in our home. And three years to specifically collect for this home and style it the way it would work in the spaces. So to think that you can instantly have a collected home aesthetic is a hard reality you have to face that it’s just not going to happen. And that’s completely OK. Taking your time to create a collected home that tells a story of who you are and the adventures you have gone through is the best type of home. It brings in the cosy and the personality. So let this be a note to take your time with your home and collect gems along the way.

Our mudroom tidy is a rare occasion so I had to document.

with this room, being not only our mudroom that allows all five of us to get our boots and jackets on at the same time, but it also doubles as our laundry room, we needed all of the space we could get.
The other thing we needed…. Was more storage. We had used @mykitchcabinets at our last house and absolutely love the quality. We knew we wanted to utilize their doors again for this space. But this time around, we also opted in for their cabinet boxes as well. When I say it was easy to build, I built all of the cabinets for this entire room in less than two hours. A lot of that was unpacking them out of the cardboard. Between the quality, the ease and the ability to completely customize the size, they are hands-down, my go to when it comes to Canadian made cabinetry.
