Handmade DIY Ghost Garland
I will be the first to admit that Halloween is definitely not my favourite holiday. To be honest, I'm sure it was as a kid. I mean comparatively to Christmas, it probably was up there a second best. But maybe all those nights at the clubs in my 20s dressing up in Halloween, and always feeling inferior, it kind of ruined it for me along the way.
With kids though, you've got a put the effort in when it comes to holidays. I would never want my kids not loving a holiday, because their mom never wanted to celebrate it. So here I am, doing DIY's for a holiday. I don't love, but I'm trying to like.
Growing up, I had Martha Stewart as a mom. She literally watched every episode, had every magazine issue, and every type of craft supplies we would need to create anything that Martha shared. Sheet ghosts in the window, no problem. Fancy pumpkin carving with my dad's power tools, easy, Peezy. There was nothing my mom would stop at when it came to Halloween, or any holiday for that matter.
But that's the type of decorations, that I love the most. The homemade ones that are surrounded with memories and effort. I find they are so much classier than those plastic ones that you find at the dollar store and Walmart. So the last two years, I've been hunting down DIY's that suit the aesthetic of our house but also I can do with my kids to create the same memories My mom had done with us.
One of the garlands that I made last year was inspired by a ghost ceramic garland I found online that I had a steep price tag of $130 Canadian. I mean, for you diehard Halloween fans, that might not feel too steep but for someone who is leaning into the holiday, I just couldn't see myself spending that much money on a garland. I loved it though, and wanted to figure out how to make it for myself without having to invest over $1000 in taking up a ceramics hobby. I realized that air dry clay could probably give me the same outcome for less than $10.
Armed with a tulip cookie cutter, some Crayola air dry clay, and black string I was able to make the same vibe of Garland for under $15 in the matter of minutes. Head to the YouTube video above to find all of the information how to make it, and the supplies needed in the description of the video.
xoxo happy trick-or-treating!
