My Family are in the tree business. For the past 150+ years, the Corkum’s have been loggers, owning woodlots all around my hometown. A cool fact about my county is that we are the Christmas tree capital of the world. So, naturally, one of the lots that my Great Uncle owns, is a Christmas tree lot that is on beautiful hills that border a lake just up from my parents house.
Since we were born, and even when my father was a baby, we would head to the lot before it opened to the public and go on the hunt for our perfect tree. I remember being out there for hours, even as the sun started to fade, trekking through the trees with my dad and sisters, trying to find the biggest fattest tree that we all loved. Once we finally found THE tree, my dad would mark it with a wooden block saying our last name and ribbons that meant ‘do not cut’. It was a dreadful but super special trip all together.
Now that we have kids, we love to incorporate some of the traditions I grew up with into our own. Going to my family tree lots have always been one.
This weekend was a hard one on Aubrey, with a ton of rain and being stuck in the house with me sick. So, with a break in the rain, we decided to kick off the holiday season and get Aubrey and Zeus out for some exercise by heading out to tag our tree. It was cold and wet but we left the lot with such happy hearts. Now, in two weeks, we will return to cut down the tree that we found and brig it home to decorate as a family and get it ready for Santa’s arrival. Guys, I LOVE Christmas.
What are some of your favorite traditions to kick off the holiday season?
