I’ve Missed You…Here’s our Hallway Update

Right when I think I’m officially at the stage of life where I can start blogging again, life throws a loophole, and 20 million things all happen at once. Blame it on the fact that there are so many different social media channels that as a creator, you have to nurture, causing the blog to just take a backseat. Let’s also just be honest that it’s just me, and as a team of 1, plus mothering three busy kids, I have to admit that I can’t do it all, even though I wish I could.

You know what else takes way longer to get to now? The end of a project!

Even though, we technically work full-time for ourselves, me, full-time at home creating content to inspire all of you beautiful people. Between keeping up the household, doing contracted work, and making sure I’m sharing weekly on socials, projects that used to take maybe a few months to do, are now seeming to take over a year. I’m going to also blame it on the fact that everything is so much more expensive, projects just need to be spaced out way more to be able to afford them.

Which brings me to finally sharing our upstairs hallway. We started this project in the fall of 2023. We had lived in the house for a year at that point and we needed to figure out a way to cover the wallpaper that would not come off, update the stair railing to not only bring it up 16 inches higher to meet code, but also have both the original hallway and the new hallway we had created to make the home a four bedroom, feel like they have always been there and have always looked that way. We knew this meant that we needed to add wall treatment and a solid wood stair railing.

As Canadians, especially in this economy, we really wanted to make sure we were supporting Canadian companies even back then before all the Tarriffs started. That’s why we went to Alexandria moulding for all of the Products to get this hallway feeling like its 1879 self.

Our first step was Panelling every ounce of the walls using their beadboard panels, while we were adding those, we also switched out the baseboard for 1x8inch flat moulding to give it a more chunky and elevated look. We had almost finish the space and realized we didn’t have enough beer board panels. Wallpaper to the rescue. We ended up, adding a small wainscot around the entire circumference of the new hallway, and a beautiful Sandburg wallpaper mural to the top portion. I honestly love how it turned out.

Next up was finally removing the stair railing and replacing it with a white oak from Alexandria Moulding. When I tell you we studied it stair railing’s for a year before we decided what to go with, I’m not even exaggerating. We wanted to make sure that the items we chose were true to the age of the home as best as our ability. We went with a flat edged straight squared spindle, with a chunky newel post. The handrail, had a bit more curves to it which gives the very linear look of the spindles a bit of a juxtaposition.

The last piece to the puzzle was a new window. We knew that this entire side of the house needed new windows. None of them opened and with summer fast approaching we needed to fix that. We opted for Jeld-Wen’s new 8500 series and It did not dissapoint.

Now is the time to finish decorating and have some fun in the space.
