Our Roman Shades in The Kids Room
As you might remember, this spring we had the amazing opportunity to renovate and re-decorate the kids room with the help of IKEA Canada. We love shopping there and it really maximized the space.
One thing that changed was the layout of the room. We went from a single bunkbed to two single beds so we needed to have one against the window for them both to fit in the room. It made the yellow IKEA curtains that so many of you loved, kinda impossible to close. We tried things like pulling the bed away from the wall etc., but Aubrey would fall into the crack in the middle of the night. We loved this layout and so did the kids so we knew the curtains had to be the thing to go.
We started looking into blinds companies, but we knew we had an overall look we wanted. We wanted a roman shade with a fold called the 'waterfall' which essentially means that you can't see any seams when the blinds are closed but when they are open, they fold nicely against themselves. We also want blackout and cordless so that they were the safest you could get in the kids room, especially with one being right next to the bed. Having that type of a fold with a cordless shade was hard to come by until we found it at Blinds To Go (c/o).
Blinds To Go were fantastic, sending us a pile of samples for materials that we were liking online but needed to see in person. Then, once we'd chose from the samples the colour that match the room perfectly, they walked us through step-by-step how to measure the window and even mocked up what it would look like with those measurements.
We ended up going with the 'Dow Linen' material as it was the perfect shade of gray to match our York wallcoverings wallpaper. We loved the slight pattern that it had on it, almost like a herringbone, which really warmed up the space. Essentially we wanted a window covering that would be able to stand the test of time as well as being neutral enough to still keep the space gender neutral and ageless for when and if we Airbnb or Sell.
What's great is that the kids can easily close and open the roman shades themselves. And although we had to mount them on the outside of our window (old window moulding to blame) they still give enough of a black out that the kids can easily sleep even if the sun is still up.
Roman shades are expensive and speaking from experience 100% worth the investment. I know that when you start looking at investing in things for your home, like sheets for example, it's very hard to spend the money on something that doesn't necessary bring you the same type of joy a new outfit or electronic would. But, just like new sheets, these are items that you use every single day and you want to make sure they can withstand the test of time and the daily use. For us, having proper window covers, brings as a totally different sense of joy that makes the space look just so much more finished and impressive. We are so happy that we made this leap.
