I will be the first to admit that once the christmas decorations are taken down and put away, I miss them. Without them the house feels empty and cold, lacking that magical personality that comes with twinkle lights and green garlands drapped around.
Over the years, I have tried to add different ways into our decor to make the winter season not feel so bland. There are many things that you can do, and one of them is keeping some of your holiday decor that could be more classified as a winter decor up. But, here are 5 ways to make your home feel warm and cosy when the christmas decor is taken down.
- Layer all of the blankets
Our family are huge fans of snuggling up at night under blankets. Living in a century home, you best believe there’s lots of drafts especially in the dead of winter. Adding lots of different textures and layers of throw blankets around your home, keeps that cosy winter feeling going long after the holidays.
2. Keep your throw pillows warm in color and texture
Throw pillows are such a great way to switch up your decor for each season. We like to mix high end with low end and always make sure they have feather inserts. Ikea has some great low cost options of both, with their green velvets and knit covers, amazon is also a great option. For high end, we love places like tonic living where the throw pillows aren’t going to break the bank but are in amazing warm textiles like wool and thick linen. Sticking to the warm colour palette like greens and rust while also mixing in different textures from wool to velvet, will make your space feel extra this winter.
3. Forage sticks instead of flowers
I love a fresh bouquet and once March rolls around I am definitely the person with all of the tulips around our home. But from January to March, one of my favourite ways to decorate with vases is to cut down branches from trees and bushes. they add depth to a space while also reminding you of the season outside. And, with proper water changes, you might actually get them to force bloom.
4. Switch out your area rug for the season
With amazing places to shop like Rugs USA, Wayfair, Revival, Amazon, and Homesense, area rugs have become way more affordable. We like to match our rugs to the season, switching out our lighter colored rugs during the winter months with warmer tones like our latest one from Revival. If you dont want to spend the money on multiple rugs, try rotating rugs from one room to another in your home. It can give your rooms a whole new look with no cost added.
5. Add some extras
during the spring and summer months, we like to keep things pretty simple and light in decor. But, for the dead of winter, the more is better. Adding extra items like candles, sheep skins, wood bowls, dark vases (thrift and then spray paint) and books will give you warmth to the space and add character.
