5 Things You Need To Know Before Re-Painting Your Deck
With my last post, I'm sure you saw that we have many projects on the go all at the same time. One of these projects were redoing our front porch and back deck before we throw the kids' Birthday party.When we moved in, the house and yard needed a lot of work. Most of the paint had been chipped off by the elements and many boards were rotting through and dangerous to walk on. We slowly started replacing the boards last year, and this summer, it was time for a fresh coat.We teamed up with Canadian Tire to test out their newly launched and revamped Premier Paint line that now rivals those high-end brands but without the price tag. Knowing that we liked the look of a solid color as opposed to a stain, we opted for the Premier Active Solid Stain in the Cape Cod Grey to match the cedar shake siding and white windows and banister. the paint was super easy to apply and we only needed two coats to get the goal we were wanting.Since finishing, we are now working on decorating the spaces and using them as active living areas. But I will admit that we learned some things about re-painting decks along the way. So without further adieu, here are 5 things you need to know before starting to re-paint your deck.
What supplies do you need?
First things first, you need to make sure you are fully prepared with everything you need before you dive into the project. Unfortunately, that involves more than just paint. From Deck stripper and a paint scraper to both a roller with an extension and paintbrushes. Make sure you are prepared for anything and everything. We used this roller and this paint brush and had great results.
Do you prefer a stain or a solid?
This is a question that is mostly for people with newer decks. Once you have an older, weathered deck, you really should go for a solid to not only help with keeping the wood lasting longer but also to hide any damage and age the wood might have.
What color will match both your home's exterior and your style?
This is a big question. We are very minimalistic when it came to our house opting for a color pallet of white, black, and gray. So for us, it was a choice between white and gray. Canadian Tire's Premier Solid stains have such a great range of colors to match any move in your decor you are wanting to make.
Do you have the skill set?
From replacing boards to having the patience to paint. you may be in over your head. I am lucky that my husband is so handy but also know enlisting a good handy friend or family member is sometimes the best decision. And, if you don't have one of those close by, then, maybe consider hiring out the full task or parts of it that you are unsure of.
Are you prepared for the time it will take?
The biggest thing about a painting project is not only the time it takes to prep the wood, but also the time it takes to paint and wait between each coat. A project like this can take up to a few days. Be prepared and schedule around the project so that you get it done.
